Pluto TV is ringing in the new year by adding the iconic sci-fi series The X-Files to its lineup. The show will debut on the free, ad-supported streaming service on Jan. 1, 2026.
All 11 seasons — a total of 218 episodes, including the 2016 revival — will be available both on demand and via a dedicated 24/7 linear channel within Pluto TV’s sci-fi category. The series will join fellow genre staples such as Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Stargate and Doctor Who.
The channel will launch with a complete chronological run of the series, followed by curated weekend marathons for fans looking to revisit key episodes.
Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files starred David Duchovny as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Special Agent Dana Scully. The series originally aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002, before returning for two shorter revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. The franchise also spawned two feature films released in 1998 and 2008.
In 2024, Carter confirmed to TheWrap that director Ryan Coogler is developing a reboot of The X-Files for Disney/ABC. While details remain limited, Carter shared that the new version would feature a more diverse cast and said Coogler has “some good ideas” for the project.
Although Carter is not directly involved in the reboot, he previously said he would be “tempted” to create his own new version of the series if Duchovny and Anderson were interested in returning. Anderson, who once ruled out revisiting the franchise, has since said she would be open to working with Coogler on the reboot.
